Visiting the Ad Agency with my LG Seeds Internship

Instead of traveling the country to visit interns, dealers, or farmers, I did something a little different this week. I visited Broadhead, a marketing agency in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Now you may be asking yourself, “what is an agency?” If you have never heard of an agency before, you are not alone! If it weren’t for my mentor Laura Vsetecka and this internship, I wouldn’t know what one was either. When I first started this internship, Laura talked to me about how AgReliant does some marketing work with an agency and how she thought it would be a good experience for me to visit one. At the beginning of my internship, my mentality was to learn as much as I can in the short three months I am the marketing intern for AgReliant, so I was all game. Laura got in contact with Broadhead to set up a day for me to go to the Minneapolis and spend a day with the agency.

Before I knew it, I was maneuvering through the busy twin cities to find my way to Broadhead. Being the small-town Iowa girl that I am, Minneapolis was a whole new ball game for me. The biggest city I have ever really spent time in is Des Moines, and I quickly learned that it is nothing compared to Minneapolis. I learned that a ten-minute drive turns into a thirty-minute drive in the morning and trying to find a place to park is an obstacle of its own. But don’t worry – I was on time, I found a place to park in a parking ramp, and I found my way to Broadhead’s lobby.

I learned so much more than I ever could have imagined by spending a day at Broadhead. I was nervous that I would be the only person in the building who knew anything about crops or livestock, but I quickly found out that Broadhead does most of their agency work with other agricultural companies. My nerves of the big city were set at ease when I was given a tour of the office and all I could see were previous projects they worked on scattered throughout such as The Angus Journal, Successful Farming, and different livestock pharmaceutical companies. Not only did I feel welcomed by the agriculture that surrounded me, but the people were amazing.

The human resources director had a whole day planned out for me.  My day was set up to meet with a person from each department of the agency. There were more departments to marketing and advertising than I ever thought of. I met with the CEO, Creative Directors, Paid Social Engagement Reporting Manager, Public Relations Manager, Media Supervisor, Project Manager and Social Media Content Manager. I am sure you are probably thinking all those titles sound pretty similar to each other, but they all had a very specific role to play at Broadhead. Even though they were all intriguing, my favorite two meetings were with the Public Relations Manager and the Social Media Content Manager. The day flew by – but I learned a ton and I am so glad I had the opportunity to learn about Broadhead and make some connections with people in the agency world.

The rest of my week, I spent some much-needed relaxing time at home editing content from the past month. It is crazy to think I only have three weeks left as the marketing intern. Make sure to keep up with my blogs to see how I am wrapping up my summer internship.
