SEED
PIRACY DOESN'T PAY
The right to save seed from plants
registered under the Plant Variety
Protection Act (PVPA) does not convey to
farmers the right to save seed from plants
that contain technologies patented under the
Patent Law.
Nearly 524 new seed piracy allegations have
been opened since June 2004. The average
settlement per grower is $93,500 which
translates into $100 per unit or about $122
per acre.
Seeds containing the Roundup Ready® trait
are protected under numerous United States
patents, including patent No. RE39,247. It
is unlawful to save Roundup Ready® soybeans
for planting or transfer to others for use
as planting seed. |
